Artist's Comments

This is a second sketch of one of my characters that I did a while ago. I will color this soon and post the colored version up. I just want to correct a few things first because I really like this drawing.

:icongimmefeedback: I want to know if the way that she is holding the spear in between her fingers is anatomically correct. Also, I'm having a bit of trouble deciding if the puddle on the porch should have the lines of the porch still visible underneath or should I take those lines out when I color this drawing. This drawing is going to be colored in color pencils.

The hand holding the spear looks a bit...odd.
Holding anything like that looks very uncomfortable...but i think that the spear should be inbetween the pointer and middle fingers instead of inbetween the middle and ring. The thump positioning needs some work too.
Other than that I really love the detail in this picture, espically the tail~

Thank you for the tips on the hand. I will work on that before I color this.

I think the thumb where the spear is, is on the wrong side. Use your hand as reference, and twist it as you hold it up and down to see which way the thumb points. Reference is always a good idea. It took me a minute to actually see that she was in water, but I think you should keep the lines in. Water is clear, don't forget. It's like a malleable glass. I love the hair and eyes in here! Also, what is on the puddle on the right? If it is a reflection, I think it would be a very good idea to blur it much more. Good luck with colouring!

There's a hole in the middle of the porch. I guess I should have some of the water go into that. I don't know how I messed that part up with the hand. I guess I'm too used to having the thumbs on the inside with my usual poses.

With what you said about water, I think I can draw the rest of the fin that is not being blocked by the porch before coloring. I'm now thinking about how water works which is really good because I like drawing mermaids. Thanks for the idea!

Glad I could help! Here are some tutorials on water if you would like! Some are for photoshop, but they can still show you what water may do in certain situations. [link] [link] [link] [link] [link]

The thumb should be on the other side. That spear looks thick. Holding it between the middle fingers would be a little uncomfortable, unless it was a very thin blade-like spear.

I think the lines of the porch under the puddle should stay to make it look like a slim layer of water rather than part of the pond. When you colour this, pay special mind to the shine that comes from wet surfaces.

I hope this is useful to you.

Like it's already been said the thumb is on the wrong side.

I think you should keep the lines, but make them a bit blury so its more like a water efect :D.

She looks a bit stiff in some parts but other than that it looks good! :)

Very helpful. You gave me a good idea of what I'm going to do about the spear and the water too.
